Sanitary Fish Market & Restaurant
501 Evans St.
Morehead City, NC

(252) 247-3111

The Sanitary is a landmark on the Morehead City waterfront. In 1938 Ted Garner and Tony Seamon, both now deceased, opened a waterfront seafood market in a building rented for $5.50 per week. The name Sanitary Fish Market was chosen by the partners to project their compliance with sanitary seafood handling. When 12 stools were set up at the counter, the first seafood restaurant on the city's waterfront was in business. Today's customers find old favorite menu items along with many new additions. Best known for fresh seafood served broiled, steamed, grilled or fried, the Sanitary also offers steaks, poultry and pasta entrees, as well as the best hush puppies around.  Lunch always includes a good selection of vegetables and attracts lots of locals. The squash casserole and baked sweet potatoes are especially good.  The Sanitary offers a good selection of beer and wine, and lunch and dinner are served every day of the week. The restaurant is open during December with limited hours and closes December 31 until February. The Sanitary Fish Market and Restaurant has an ABC permit.
